Halloween is almost upon us! With less than a week before the big day, you’re probably already getting ready for your own ghoulish Halloween party. Whether you’re hosting your own or going to someone else’s, Halloween parties are a chance to get a little spooky, including tricking your friends with (seemingly) gory treats. From mild to macabre, check out these easy to prepare gross-out snacks and sweets perfect for your Halloween party table.
Gummy (or jelly) worms
One of the classic Halloween party treats is gummy worms. Gummy worms are a quick buy for your Halloween party, but did you know you can serve them on a mound of Oreo cookie crumbs to look like dirt? They’re a nice starting point for any guests who might not want anything too realistic looking for their gross-out for.
That said, if your party guests are more adventurous, why not go the extra mile and make slightly more realistic-looking jelly worms from JELL-O, extra gelatin, whipping cream, and food coloring. Using plastic straws as a mold gives them ridges and makes them look like real worms!
If you’re having a sit-down dinner party, you’re definitely going to want more than just sweet treats and snacks at the table. Consider cooking your favorite thick stew recipe. While that’s simmering away, cook some orzo pasta or long grain rice in a separate pot. For the presentation, carefully place the orzo or rice on top of the stew (either in individual bowls or in the serving dish if it’s a buffet) so it looks like maggots on top of viscera. It’s a total gross out visual that your party guests won’t be expecting.
Go for the brains
Want to go full mad scientist with your guests this Halloween? Why not serve brains! Or something that looks like them, anyway.
Check out online shops or specialty cooking stores for a brain mold (not too hard to find around Halloween). As long as the finished results are firm enough to hold their shape after you take the mold off, you can let your imagination go wild! JELL-O is certainly traditional, using a flavor like watermelon for a human brain or lime for a zombie brain.
You can even make it look more like a brain texture if you use a Cool Whip-based, JELL-O salad recipe. If you want to go savory, try a cream cheese-based spread served with crackers, then stab the “brain” with a spreading knife for the presentation.
This is another great party idea for the adults at the party. Sure, they want the gross-out food, but they also don’t want to fill up on sugar. A classic chip dip is in order. After carving your pumpkin, spoon out your favorite guacamole recipe so it looks like it’s coming out of the jack-o-lantern’s mouth. The guac’s natural olive green color makes the perfect puke. Just make sure to carve a particularly “grossed out” face on the pumpkin to make the visual complete.
Serve real bugs
If you want to go for the literal gross out, try edible bugs! Specialty shops and online stores have chocolate covered crickets, ants, and larvae that are becoming more and more popular among adventurous eaters. Or why not scorpions trapped in “amber” lollypops? Some companies even sell tequila flavored lollipops with a worm inside.
But you don’t have to go sweet; many of those specialty shops also offer savory varieties of crickets, grasshoppers, and ants in different flavors! These bugs take gross-out Halloween food to a whole new level and your risk taker friends will go wild for them.
Just make sure to properly label them when you place them out for guests — if you’re making any of the fake-out gross-out snacks, you don’t want an unsuspecting guest to mistake these real bugs for one of your tricks or treats!
