We’re always on the go and we don’t go anywhere without our phones – we look at them before bed and immediately when we wake up, and we don’t go anywhere without them. So it’s no surprise that the latest trend in dining is finding more ways to let people do some handheld dining. Meaning: what can I eat with one hand while I use my other to look up the score of the game? Or get directions?
According to an IDC research report, 91% of American adults own a cell phone and many use the devices for more than just phone calls – the most popular tasks being email, web browsing and then of course, Facebook. We just need our devices.
So, how can restaurants appeal to these distracted diners?
Inventions like the Crispy Cone let restaurants or other food vendors place all sorts of different ingredients in a cone shaped flaky crust, giving diners the ability to eat a pizza on the go. Portable and easy – things we desperately search for when we’re constantly on the go. Not to mention, easy to handle with one hand.
Or how about the hand-held sushi burritos from Sushirrito? These made-to-order sushi rolls are filled with fresh and eco-friendly ingredients. Not only is this easy to eat with one hand, but it’s also healthy and combines two concerns of the modern diner – eating fast but also eating fresh.
Finally, have you heard about the KFC Go Cups? Five different options give you wings or sandwiches (with fries!) all in a “go” cup that will easily fit in the cup feature of your car.
All of these foods tempt the distracted diner – one who is driving or needs their hands for their mobile device or needs a quick meal on the go. So when thinking about how you can expand your business to the on-to-go consumer, think beyond the drive-thru and think about what you can make portable and easy to eat with just one hand!
