A card-linked offer (CLO) is a rewards, discount, or cashback amount that is applied to a consumer’s debit or credit card automatically after a purchase is made at a participating merchant.
It is unique in the landscape of promotional offers in that it doesn’t require any coupons, promo codes, or membership cards to be shown at the point of purchase. All that a card-linked offer needs in order to be processed is the consumer’s credit or debit card to be registered (i.e. linked) with the program making the reward or cashback offer.
Does Rewards Network work with card-linked offers?
We do! We were founded as a company called Transmedia in 1984, and today operate exclusively as a card-linked offer platform. In fact, Rewards Network is a pioneer in card-linking technologies for the restaurant industry, with multiple patents to our name.
All of our dining programs — from American Airlines’ AAdvantage DiningSM and Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles® Dining to Hilton Honors Dining and our own iDine® program — operate as card-linked offers. Members join a dining program, link their credit or debit card to their program account, and then receive their rewards of choice automatically after using that card at a participating restaurant.
Why do your customers like card-linked offers?
For one, they’re easy!
As long as the cards they use are linked to a rewards program, your customers will receive their reward of choice on all purchases made at participating locations. There’s no regret in forgetting a coupon or hassle at check-out with staff who may or may not be trained on how to apply rewards to a customer’s bill. Everything is handled behind-the-scenes — for both the customer and the restaurant!
And acceptance of card-linking is growing. According to a CreditCards.com survey commissioned by Gfk Custom Research North America, 42 percent of consumers who use credit or debit cards prefer getting an automatically applied discount or reward, rather than showing a coupon or card. But among cardholders 18 to 34 years old, that number jumps to 54 percent.
Rewards Network’s card-linked offers are particularly enticing to customers because we offer rewards they’re deeply passionate about — and at a much greater value than other card-linked programs on the market. From 10% back to 8 points per $1, the potential to earn with Rewards Network is much higher than what other reward programs can provide.
Why do restaurants like card-linked offers?
Card-linked offers, like those offered by Rewards Network dining programs, make offering rewards to your customers a seamless experience for them — but also for your staff. There is no upfront cost, software installation, additional training, or any set-up hassle necessary. The card-linked offers provided by Rewards Network are a 100% turnkey solution to the question of adding value to the dining experience and driving new and return visits
Your restaurant doesn’t need to enroll customers or define promotions. We take care of the who, what, where, when, and how. Your restaurant management can just focus on what they do best. Our members pay full menu price, so there’s no discounting your brand. And your servers are tipped on the full check amount.
Are card-linked offers safe?
Rewards Network complies with the security standards required by the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI DSS). We are certified against the most current version of the standard.
The Council was founded in 2006 by five prominent payment brands — including American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard, and Visa Inc. This global forum is responsible for the development, management, education, and awareness of security standards for credit and debit cards.
PCI DSS applies to all entities involved in payment card processing. This includes retailers where consumer purchases are made, payment card processors, credit card issuers, and service providers. Rewards Network continually reviews its payment card security practices to ensure that those practices satisfy the requirements of the most current version of the PCI DSS compliance standards. Rewards Network’s security practices and PCI DSS compliance are audited on an annual basis.
Because the security of your information is important to Rewards Network, we limit the amount of information we collect. We only need the card number for our card-linked offers to match, not the expiration date or CVV number. And the program itself never charges your card directly. The only charge is from the restaurant itself.
We believe that the effort toward compliance is not a one-time event, but rather a continuous effort that is consistently being reviewed, improved, and maintained to help preserve the security of our merchants’ and members’ information.
